This course offers an introduction to nursing informatics. Nursing Informatics integrates computer science, nursing science and information science that identifies, gathers, processes, and manages patient information. The course provides basic foundation on information management and processing principles used to support the data, information, and knowledge needs in the provision and delivery of nursing and health care. The emphasis is on healthcare applications that support clinical, administrative, research, and educational decision making thus enhancing the efficacy of nursing endeavors. Other topics include computer hardware, software, nursing languages, and computerized patient record. Privacy, confidentiality and security of medical records, legal and ethical issues will be addressed.
