Q: What is a simulated patient (SP)?
A: A simulated patient is an individual who plays the role of a patient for purposes of teaching and/or testing learners within the educational environment.
Q: What skills are required to become a simulated patient?
A: You do not need to have any previous experience. All SPs will undergo training to prepare them for the role.
Q: Can I be a simulated patient if I have a medical problem?
A: Yes, but you should let us know about your medical conditions. For some sessions we may be looking for people with certain conditions to make the simulation scenario more realistic.
Q: Will I get any medical treatment by working as an SP?
A: You will not get any medical care or treatment during the training or working as an SP.
Q: What benefits are there for me?
A: You will be supporting the educational goals and skills of the SP program to improve community health care, patient safety, quality of care and help develop the skills of tomorrow's doctors. Also, you will be compensated for your participation.
Q: What are the essential requirements to enroll as simulated patient (SP)?
A: You must...
• speak and understand English.
• be able to act as a real patient/role play the part of a patient.
• be at ease with people and have good verbal communication skills.
• have a flexible work schedule with availability during normal business hours.
• have and use email for communication.
• be committed and reliable to arrive on time for scheduled activities.
Q: Are SPs used for invasive procedures, such as insertion of needles?
A: No. If it is necessary to simulate medically invasive procedures, such as procedures that involve needles, learners will use mannequins and/or models in our skills lab.
Rights & Duties
Rights:
• I should be treated with respect by all health care professionals.
• I will be provided with appropriate draping and privacy during physical examination.
• Contribution as a simulated patient is voluntary and I may withdraw from the program at any time.
• If I feel pain or sickness at any time during the examination, I have the right to ask the student to stop.
• I should read and understand the terms and conditions before I start the training.
• I will be provided feedback regarding my performance after the session.
• All information in your application will be kept confidential and will only be used by staff and trainers in the simulated patient program unit, RCSC.
Duties:
• I should attend all required training sessions and scheduled activities on time.
• I am responsible for informing the trainer at least 24 hours in advance if I am unable to attend any scheduled training sessions or activities.
• I am not allowed to contact learners outside the learning venue and disclose any information pertaining to the exam or activity.
• I understand that simulated patient work is occasional and upon request of KSAU-HS.
• Adherence to professional standards, such as good hygiene and cleanliness is required.
