Biostatistics Support Center

The Biostatistics Support Center (BRSC) aim is to enhance the quality of scientific research through the promotion and conduct of good research practices among KSAU-HS affiliates. This is in keeping with the university’s ongoing commitment to innovative learning, scientific research, compassionate patient care, and community health promotion. BSC provides specialist advice, support and training for investigators undertaking research within KSAU-HS and other entities interested in collaborative research work. The BSC team has a broad range of research and training expertise across clinical, community and general practice research settings. BSC offers consultations on study design, research proposal grant writing, design and maintenance of databases for clinical trials and observational studies, and statistical analysis. BSC provides advice for a variety of types of investigations ranging from rigorous clinical trials undertaken by well-established research teams, to small studies proposed by researchers who are just starting to engage in research.

Bio-statistical Consultations

1- Project conception and grant proposal preparation In the proposal writing stage, BSC consultants can provide guidance in:
a. Formulation of statistical hypotheses
b. Study design
c. Sample size determination and sampling techniques
d. Design and setup of data collection and capturing tools

2-     Data Analysis At the data analysis stage, BSC consultants provide the following service
a. Performing statistical analyses
b. Preparation of a full statistical report (Word or PDF format) including all results (text, tables, figures) and interpretatio
c. Interpretations of the findings and conclusions from the analyses
d. Revise manuscripts as per journal reviewers’ comments

3-    Data Management Services
BSC data management facility supports interventional and observational studies. This includes the production of study documents, data collection and  computerization, data quality monitoring, data cleaning and initial summary tabulations

4- Training
BSC offers comprehensive training programs. The formats of these programs include seminars, workshops, modular programs and web-based material. Both BSC consultants and invited local and international lecturers contribute to these training programs. These interactive sessions are ideal for those who want to learn how to independently analyze data. These training programs include introductory, intermediate and advanced topics in biostatistics and related disciplines as well as training in specialized statistical software.

5- Computing lab
BThe computer lab facility is used to design and maintain databases of the various observational and clinical trial studies conducted in collaboration with investigators. The lab also provides access to site-licensed specialized software that might be too expensive to procure and maintain by an individual user.

6- Clinical trials:
BSC provides expertise and facilitates institutional, local and international multi-center clinical trials from design, implementation and protocol approval, through to conduct, data management and analysis, and reporting of results. It promotes the full range of non-commercial and commercial clinical trial activity funded by a variety of sources such as local research centers and organizations and the pharmaceutical industry. BSC provides study monitoring services to ensure that studies are set up, conducted and completed in accordance with the approved protocol and pertinent regulations. The range of consultations encompasses:

1.   Trial design
2.   Development of Case Report Form (CRF)
3.   Data management plan
4.   Development and validation of clinical trial database
5.   Data entry, validation and discrepancy management
6.   Screening and accrual reporting
7.   Sample size calculations
8.   Randomization
9.   Statistical analysis plan (SAP)
10.  Reports to TSC and DMEC
11.  Analysis, interpretation and reporting
